The Legacy of Boarding School

This workshop is aimed at both trainee and qualified counsellors who want to understand the impact on clients of attending boarding school. It is presented from personal and familial experience and, whilst not necessarily a universal experience of boarding, hopes to develop awareness of the feelings and behaviours which can be the legacy of boarding.

Whilst some individuals experience boarding as a refuge from a damaging home environment, many do not, and for some, both environments are damaging. The insights gained from this workshop can provide extra information when supporting people who have previously attended boarding schools and help build awareness of some of the ongoing challenges they may face.

The workshop will cover:

· A personal experience of boarding

· The impact and legacy of boarding

· Therapeutic perspectives -from both client and therapist viewpoint

· What might be helpful when working with ex-boarders.

Due to the personal nature of this workshop and the emotive topic, attendees should be aware that this might elicit strong feelings, particularly if you have attended boarding school. As with all workshops, especially online ones, it is your responsibility to look after yourself and to ensure you have whatever resources and support you need to enable you to attend safely.

About the Trainer - Sue Black

Sue has been delivering counselling training since 2011. She is a qualified and experienced counsellor and supervisor, with a private practice based in rural Angus. Sue attended boarding school in England from the age of 11 to 18. Her siblings also boarded at schools in both England and Scotland, some from the age of 7 years old. Sue has also worked with clients who are ex-boarders and has undergone her own personal therapy. She therefore has broad experience and understanding of the legacy of boarding from a personal, familial and therapeutic perspective.
