Description

Delivering high quality Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) requires a sound knowledge of the model and high level of skill in using the core techniques. The CBT therapist’s work is further complicated as they strive to adapt their therapeutic skills to meet the unique needs of our clients. This can be challenging, rewarding and also a pressure in our clinical work as we work to deliver quality CBT therapy for the wide range of presenting problems, personality types and the personal/social circumstances of our clients.

This event is for both intermediate/advanced therapists who want to refresh their CBT knowledge/skills base and also for trainee therapists who are building their knowledge/skills base. We will explore a selection of the most commonly used techniques and give the opportunity for knowledge/skills development by reconsidering the theory, common obstacles and engaging in skill practice.

There was simply too much to cover in one day so we are offering 2 days. Each day is a stand-alone event, or together, provide a comprehensive exploration of CBT core skills.

Day 1

We will start off by considering the therapeutic relationship and session structure from a CBT perspective. Then we will explore the CBT view of Core Beliefs/Rules for Living and Dysfunctional Assumptions in terms of their far-reaching influence and how we identify and modify them. We will then consider the concept of Guided Discovery as a dynamic process in which the therapist supports the client reflection on their thoughts/beliefs and how these cognitions impact on their functioning within their daily lives. Focus will then be on skills development via didactic teaching, skills practice and discussion on the following tools:

  1. Observations and Self Report – These skills are often underestimated but they are the foundations on which all the clients increase self-awareness and change are built. This work will include client observation of images in relation to gaining greater understanding of emotionally charged material.

  1. Thought Records – Pivotal CBT technique that is powerful for increased self-awareness and change. We explore the problems/obstacles and look at client friendly thought records.

  1. Downward Arrow/Upwards Arrow – Is a vital CBT component. The skill is in the planning/preparation before use.

Day 2 we will cover

In day 2 we develop skills via didactic teaching, skills practice and discussion on the following tools:

  1. Cognitive Continuum – We consider the many different ways it can be use.

  1. Behavioural Experiments – Used in many ways including to open the mind to other beliefs/options, test or consolidate a belief, test a prediction, test coping strategies. We consider the planning, power of post experiment learning, attention to detail and troubleshooting what to do when a well-planned experiment goes wrong.

  1. Imagery – We will explore the use of imagery in imaginal exposure and in imagery re-scripting. Additionally, we will introduce concept and rationale of limited re-parenting via emotion focused imagery in schema therapy.

  1. Socratic Questioning – Here the therapist's skill can appear low key in the session but is supercharged in how it can help the client find their own answers. We consider the 4 stages and how a “Lieutenant Columbo” approach can enhance the client’s learning and empowerment.

  1. Socratic Questioning V Guided Discovery – We will round off the second day by considering the differences and overlaps of these two powerful techniques.
