Most, if not all therapists have a pretty good understanding of trauma, what causes it, the dynamic of a traumatised psychology, and how trauma impacts on people’s development, relationships, functioning, and physical health. Trauma is covered extensively in the literature. There is plenty of research, and a wealth of literature. In this workshop I do not wish to repeat what most practitioners already know, or can read and learn elsewhere.
This workshop will focus on working with trauma psychotherapeutically with the explicit aim of recovery. Most traumatised people can recover, and get back on the path to growing towards their potential. Most people can do a lot better than just symptom management. Therapists have to hold a vision of what is possible, and not settle on humble goals on behalf of clients. Most people with trauma have a perfectly healthy brain that can and needs to integrate and grow.
Over twenty-five years of private psychotherapy practice with adult clients (18+), I have developed a clear and coherent way of thinking about, and working with clients towards recovery. This framework is based on the principles of Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) and I will cover it in this workshop.
Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their current practice with traumatised clients, the framework that guides their work at the moment, and the challenges they face when working with traumatised clients. This workshop aims to address these challenges, and offer knowledge, and practical skills that can be readily applied, and that will enhance participants’ existing practice.
The framework Avigail will share in this workshop is described in her books, Trauma & Its Impact, and Therapy Without A Therapy.
The workshop will take place online, over two half days, to allow participants to digest the material between sessions.
This workshop is for experienced psychotherapists working in any setting, newly qualified practitioners, and students of psychotherapy. It will probably be of the most benefit for practitioners working with adult clients.
